Moving a car within Spain sounds like a small job until you look at the map. Barcelona to Madrid alone is 625 km, roughly 6 hours 15 minutes of motorway driving, just one of the corridors carriers run week in, week out. Booking a place on a multi-car transporter through our car transport service means the car travels on a professional trailer while you skip the fuel stops, the extra kilometres and the train ride back.

Most domestic bookings fall into three groups: people relocating between cities, buyers collecting a car bought online in another region (Coches.net and Wallapop finds included), and dealers shifting stock between showrooms. The same trailers carry vans too. And if your move crosses a border rather than staying inside Spain, see car transport from Italy to Spain and car transport from France to Italy.

How much does car transport in Spain cost?

Here is a real example from our price table: moving a Fiat 500 from Barcelona to Madrid, 625 km door to door, costs 690 to 880 euros without VAT. That is a fair reference for a small car on a busy corridor.

Where your own quote lands depends on a few things. Vehicle size and weight matter, since a large SUV takes up space the carrier could otherwise sell twice. So do the pickup and delivery addresses: a tight city-centre street can mean meeting the truck at a nearby retail park, while easy motorway access keeps the price down. Flexible dates help too: you are buying a spot on a trailer already heading your way, and a full load of 8 to 12 cars is what keeps the per-car price sensible. Request a quote with your postcodes and vehicle details and you will have a firm figure in minutes.

How long does car transport in Spain take?

On paper, Barcelona to Madrid is about 6 hours 15 minutes of driving, nearly all of it motorway. Door to door, though, think in days rather than hours: pickup windows and route occupancy decide the schedule. A transporter collects several cars along the corridor, so yours might arrive the day after loading or wait a little longer for a trailer going your way. The upside of a domestic move is predictability: no borders and no customs. If the journey ends on the Balearics or the Canaries, a ferry leg is added from ports such as Barcelona, Valencia or Cádiz; mention the island when you ask for your quote and we will price the whole journey.

Why book a transporter instead of driving it yourself?

✓ No extra kilometres on the clock ✓ No fuel, tolls or return tickets ✓ Door to door across mainland Spain ✓ Insured, verified carriers ✓ Professional loading and securing ✓ Non-runners moved too

Booking tip: coastal corridors fill up fast in summer and around Easter. If you are moving in high season, lock in your pickup date as early as you can.

Good to know

How does car transport work within Spain?

Send the route, the vehicle and a rough date, and you get a price in minutes. Once you book, we match the job with a verified carrier already running that corridor and agree a pickup window. On the day, the driver notes the car's condition on the handover document with you, then loads and straps it down. At delivery you check it against your photos before signing. You pay nothing before pickup.

Do I need to re-register my car if I move to another city in Spain?

No. Spanish number plates are national and stay with the car for life, so moving from Barcelona to Madrid does not mean new plates or a new registration. Just update the address on your registration document (the permiso de circulación) with the DGT, and your annual road tax (IVTM) will be billed by your new municipality. Just bought the car? The change of ownership is a separate step: dealers normally sort it for you, while private sales are registered with the DGT directly or through a gestor.

How should I prepare my car for transport?
  • Wash it so existing marks are easy to see, and take timestamped photos from every side.
  • Leave about a quarter tank of fuel, no more.
  • Empty the car of personal belongings, and take the Via-T toll tag off the windscreen so it cannot be charged along the way.
  • Switch off the alarm, fold in the mirrors and check the tyre pressures.
  • Tell us upfront if the car does not start or cannot be driven.
Can you transport a car that does not start?

Yes. Carriers move non-runners with a winch, but the driver needs to know in advance so the right equipment is on the trailer. Tell us whether the car rolls, steers and brakes when you request the quote, and expect a somewhat higher price, since loading takes longer and trailer positions are limited. Project cars, auction finds and cars headed to a workshop travel this way every day.

Is my car insured during the transport?

Yes. The carriers we work with carry cargo insurance covering the vehicle during loading, transport and unloading. Cover levels vary, so ask us for the specifics of yours before pickup. Personal belongings left inside are not covered: one more reason to empty the car. Read how we vet carriers on our why Send Your Auto page, or contact us with any question before you book.
