Car transport from France to Italy runs along one of the busiest vehicle corridors in Europe. Most cars follow the coast: down past Nice and Monaco, over the border at Ventimiglia, then on through Liguria towards Tuscany and Rome. Cars for Turin or Milan cross the Alps through the Fréjus or Mont Blanc tunnels instead. Either way, your car rides on a professional auto carrier while you skip the tolls, the traffic and a very long day behind the wheel.

This is very much a Riviera corridor. Many bookings are second-home owners moving a car between the Côte d'Azur and Italy for the season, families relocating for work or retirement, and buyers who found the right car in France and want it delivered to their door. Dealers and collectors use the same lane for classics that shouldn't do motorway miles. It all runs through our car transport service: verified, insured carriers, door-to-door where access allows, and nothing to pay before pickup.

How much does car transport from France to Italy cost?

A real reference point from our price table: a Smart Forfour from Nice to Rome, a trip of 705 km, costs about 780 to 990 euros without VAT. A city car on a popular stretch sits at the friendly end of the scale; a big SUV, a van or an enclosed trailer for something valuable pushes the figure up.

What moves the price? Vehicle size and weight, whether it runs and drives, open or enclosed transport, how easy your addresses are to reach with a large trailer, and how flexible you can be on dates. Because France and Italy are both in the EU, there are no customs formalities and no import duty: the price you agree is the price you pay. How long does car transport from France to Italy take?

Driving Nice to Rome yourself is about 7 hours 15 of motorway in one long push. A car carrier doesn't work like that: it loads and unloads several vehicles along the route, so door-to-door time is measured in days, decided by the pickup window you agree and how full the trucks on the corridor are that week. Summer traffic around Ventimiglia and winter weather on the Alpine crossings can stretch things, so build in a small buffer. Your carrier confirms the collection window and keeps you posted through to delivery.

Practical tip: remove any télépéage or Telepass badge before handover. A car on the top deck of a carrier can still trigger toll gantries, so you'd be paying the truck's crossings.

Good to know

How does car transport from France to Italy work?

You get a quote with the route, the vehicle and roughly when you'd like it moved, then book once the price and window suit you. On pickup day the driver inspects the car with you, notes its condition on the Bill of Lading, then loads and secures it. Most cars share a multi-level carrier with 8 to 12 others, which keeps the cost sensible. At delivery you check the car against your photos before signing. The process is identical on our other southern corridors, such as car transport from Germany to Italy and car transport from Italy to Spain.

Do I need to re-register a French car in Italy?

For the transport itself you need very little: the registration certificate (carte grise), your ID and a set of keys. If you're moving to Italy permanently, EU rules say the car should be registered where you live, so you'll swap to Italian plates through the Motorizzazione Civile and the PRA, usually with a certificate of conformity and certified Italian translations of the French documents. The legal deadline after taking up residency is short and the fines are real, so start early. If you're only spending the season at a second home, you can normally keep the French plates.

How should I prepare the car before pickup?

Wash it so existing marks are visible, take timestamped photos from every side, and leave no more than a quarter tank of fuel. Clear out personal belongings, including the boot and glovebox, and take off toll badges and parking permits. Switch off the alarm, fold in the mirrors and flag anything unusual: a leak, a weak battery, very low ground clearance.

Can you transport a car that doesn't start?

Yes. Non-runners are common on this corridor, from project classics to cars headed for a specialist workshop. The carrier needs a winch or suitable loading kit, so tell us upfront that it doesn't run and whether it still rolls and steers. It changes which trucks can take the job and affects the price, but it's routine work.

Is my car insured during the transport?

Our carriers hold cargo insurance covering the vehicle during loading, transit and unloading. Cover levels vary, so ask for the details on your job before pickup. Personal items left inside aren't covered, which is another reason to empty the car. Read more about how we vet our carriers.
