Spain to Italy is one of the busiest vehicle corridors in southern Europe, and many of the cars making the trip travel on a transporter rather than on their own wheels. Take a typical booking such as Madrid to Milan: roughly 1,580 km by road, up past Zaragoza and Barcelona, across the south of France and down into Lombardy. Driving it yourself means two long days at the wheel, fuel, motorway tolls in three countries and at least one hotel night. Booking professional car transport means none of that.

All sorts of people book this corridor: buyers collecting a car found on a Spanish classifieds site, families relocating between the two countries, owners heading home after years abroad, and dealers moving stock. Carriers run regular loops in both directions, which keeps pricing sensible. If you ever need the opposite leg, our car transport from Italy to Spain service covers the return route, and for moves that stay inside the country there is car transport in Spain.

How much does car transport from Spain to Italy cost?

For a standard car on an open transporter, expect 950 to 1,340 euros ex VAT for a route like Madrid to Milan. Long international legs are priced at a lower rate per kilometre than short domestic runs, because a carrier loading 8 to 12 cars spreads its fixed costs across the whole load.

What moves the price within that range: the exact pickup and delivery addresses, whether the car runs and drives, its size and weight, how flexible you are on dates, and how full the trucks on the route already are. Enclosed transport, the closed-trailer option for classics and supercars, typically adds 40 to 70%. The quickest way to a firm figure is to get a free quote with your exact towns and vehicle details; there is no obligation.

How long does the transport take?

The driving alone comes to around 15 hours for 1,580 km, and EU drivers' hours rules mean a carrier spreads that over at least two days. Door to door, think in days rather than hours: the pickup window you agree and how quickly the truck fills along the route decide the total. A transporter rarely runs point to point; it collects and delivers other vehicles on the way.

Some carriers use the ferry links between Barcelona and Genoa or Civitavecchia instead of the land route through France. The crossing takes around 20 hours while the driver logs mandatory rest time. If your dates are tight, say so at quote stage and we will match you with a carrier whose schedule fits.

Why book a transporter instead of driving?

✓ No extra 1,580 km on the clock ✓ No two days behind the wheel ✓ No fuel, toll or hotel bills ✓ Insured, verified carriers ✓ Door-to-door pickup and delivery ✓ One clear price agreed upfront

Good to know

How does the booking process work?

You start by requesting a quote: route, make and model, whether the car runs, and roughly when you would like it moved. You get a price in minutes and pay nothing before pickup. Once booked, we agree a pickup window with the carrier. On collection day the driver inspects the car with you and notes its condition on the Bill of Lading; the same check happens at delivery, so any issue is documented. The process is identical for van transport if you are moving something larger.

Do I need to re-register the car in Italy?

There is no customs inside the EU, so nothing to clear at the border and no import duty between Spain and Italy. Re-registration is a separate matter: if you take up residence in Italy, the law requires a foreign-plated car to go onto Italian plates within 60 days of the owner becoming a resident. Keep the Spanish registration documents (permiso de circulacion, ficha tecnica) and proof of ownership to hand. A car that is only visiting can remain on Spanish plates.

How should I prepare the car?

Wash it so existing marks are easy to spot, take timestamped photos from every angle and leave no more than a quarter tank of fuel. Remove everything personal, including the Spanish Via-T toll tag, which can keep charging as the transporter passes toll gantries. Switch off the alarm, fold the mirrors and check tyre pressures. On open transport the car will arrive dusty; that is cosmetic and normal.

Can you move a car that does not run?

Yes. Non-runners are loaded with a winch or forklift, so the carrier needs to know in advance that the car will not drive onto the trailer. Mention it when you request the quote: it costs a little more but it is routine, whether it is an auction find in Spain or a breakdown heading to a workshop in Italy.

Is the car insured during transport?

Yes: our carriers hold cargo insurance that covers the vehicle against accidents and mishandling from loading to delivery. Coverage levels vary by carrier, so ask for the details when you book. Personal belongings left inside are not covered, which is one more reason to empty the car. You can read how we vet our partners on why Send Your Auto.

Practical tip: book two to four weeks ahead and avoid mid-August. Many Spanish and Italian transport firms wind down around the Ferragosto holiday, so slots get scarce and prices firm up on this corridor.
