Milan to Lisbon is roughly 2,100 km by road, across four countries and two mountain ranges. Driving it yourself takes the best part of three days each way, plus fuel, tolls, hotels and the wear on the car. Booking a place on a professional transporter usually costs less than people expect, and the car arrives with no extra kilometres on the clock.

This corridor is busy in both directions. We arrange car transport for people relocating to Portugal for work or retirement, for buyers who found the right car in Italy without leaving Lisbon, for dealers moving stock, and for owners sending a classic to a specialist. Whatever the reason, the routine is the same: get a quote, book, hand over the keys.

How much does car transport from Italy to Portugal cost?

For a standard car on an open transporter, expect 1,260 to 1,790 euros ex VAT for the Milan to Lisbon run. The price per car stays sensible because a carrier loads 8 to 12 cars at a time and the cost of the trip is shared between them. Enclosed transport, the right call for classics, exotics and anything with delicate paint, typically adds 40 to 70%.

The exact figure depends on the size and weight of the vehicle, whether it runs and drives, how flexible you are on dates, how close both addresses are to the main motorway corridor, and the season. Collections in northern Italy are the easiest to fill; a remote address in the Alentejo or the Algarve can add a little. Moving a van instead? See our van transport service. How long does delivery take?

In a car, Milan to Lisbon is around 20 hours of pure driving. A loaded transporter never does it in one push: drivers follow EU rest rules, and cars are collected and dropped along the way, usually through southern France and Spain. Some carriers shorten the land leg with the Civitavecchia to Barcelona ferry rather than crossing the Alps.

Door to door, two things decide your timing: the pickup window, meaning how soon a truck with a free spot passes your area, and how full the route is when you book. Flexible dates nearly always mean a faster pickup and a better price. The first half of the journey follows the same corridor as our car transport from Italy to Spain, a stretch trucks run every week.

Why ship instead of drive?

✓ No extra 2,100 km on the clock ✓ Door to door pickup and delivery ✓ Verified, insured carriers ✓ No payment before pickup ✓ One price covers the whole route ✓ No customs paperwork inside the EU

Good to know

How does booking work?

You request a quote with the route, the vehicle and a rough date, and we come back with a price in minutes. Once you book, we match your car with a verified carrier already running the corridor. On pickup day the driver inspects the car with you and notes its condition on the Bill of Lading; the same document is checked again at delivery before you sign. You pay nothing before pickup.

Do I need to re-register the car in Portugal?

Only if the move is permanent. Inside the EU there are no customs formalities, but a car that stays in Portugal must be re-registered: you submit the vehicle declaration (DAV) within 20 working days of arrival, pay the ISV vehicle tax, then register with the IMT for Portuguese plates. If you are moving your residence and have owned the car for at least six months, you can usually claim an ISV exemption within 12 months of the move. Once on Portuguese plates, the annual IUC road tax applies. A car that is only visiting needs none of this.

How should I prepare the car?

Wash it so existing marks are easy to spot, take dated photos from all sides, and leave no more than about a quarter tank of fuel. Remove personal belongings, toll devices and loose accessories, switch off the alarm and fold in the mirrors. If the car has a known quirk, a battery that drains or a handbrake that sticks, tell the driver before loading.

Can you move a car that does not start?

Yes. Non-runners travel on this route regularly, but the carrier needs a winch or forklift access, so say so when you request your quote. A car that still rolls and steers is cheaper to load than one that is completely seized. Never book a non-runner as a running car; the driver can refuse it at pickup.

Is my car insured during transport?

Yes. The carriers we work with hold cargo insurance that covers the vehicle while it is loaded, in transit and unloaded. Cover levels vary, so ask us for the details when you book. Personal items left inside the car are not covered, so empty it. You can read how we vet our carriers on why Send Your Auto.

Practical tip: several Portuguese motorways use electronic-only tolls with no cash booths. On the transporter that is the carrier's concern, but if you plan to drive after delivery, register the plate with EasyToll or a Via Verde visitor account first. If your car is stopping before the border, our car transport in Spain page covers moves within Spain.
