Spain to Portugal is one of the busiest corridors on the whole Iberian peninsula, and with two neighbours sharing a long land border it is a move we handle week in, week out. A typical booking from our price table: a SEAT Ibiza collected in Madrid and delivered to Lisbon, 630 km and about 6h 15m behind the wheel if you drove it yourself. Book a spot on a multi-car transporter instead, hand over the keys, and meet the car at the other end.

Expats relocating to Lisbon or the Algarve, holiday-home owners who keep a runabout in Portugal, dealers moving stock between showrooms and families who have bought a car across the border all use this route regularly. Whatever the reason, the process is the same. Our car transport service reaches every major Spanish city, from Madrid and Barcelona to Seville, Valencia and Bilbao, and if you need the trip the other way round we also run car transport from Portugal to Spain.

How much does car transport from Spain to Portugal cost?

A real example from our price table: moving a SEAT Ibiza from Madrid to Lisbon, a 630 km trip, costs 690 to 880 euros without VAT on an open transporter. A small city car sits at the lower end, while a large SUV, a pickup or a longer leg such as Barcelona to Porto climbs toward the top of the band and a little beyond.

Distance is the biggest driver, but the size and weight of the car, how flexible your collection dates are and whether you choose an open or a fully enclosed transporter all shift the final figure. Peak summer weeks, when much of northern Europe is heading south to the coast, tend to be busier and priced accordingly. Both Spain and Portugal are in the EU, so there are no customs duties, import paperwork or border charges to add on top. Request a free quote and you will have your exact price in minutes.

How long does car transport from Spain to Portugal take?

Most Spain to Portugal moves are completed within 2 to 5 days from collection, depending on where the two addresses sit and how quickly a transporter is filling for the corridor. The Madrid to Lisbon leg runs west along the A-5 across Extremadura to Badajoz, crosses the border at Caia near Elvas, then joins the A6 motorway for the final stretch into Lisbon, so it is one clear motorway run with no ferries and no mountain passes to slow things down. If your car starts its journey somewhere else in the country, our domestic car transport in Spain network feeds into the same trucks, so a pickup in Valencia or Malaga is no problem.

Why book a transporter instead of driving?

✓ No 1,250 km round trip to drive✓ Zero extra kilometres on the clock✓ No fuel, tolls or overnight stops to fund✓ Door to door pickup and delivery✓ Verified, insured carriers✓ Non-runners welcome

Portuguese motorways use electronic tolls on many stretches, and the systems can be confusing for a foreign plate, but on a transporter your car never passes a toll gantry, so it is simply not your concern.

Good to know

How does car transport from Spain to Portugal work?

You tell us the two addresses and the car, we confirm a price and a collection window, and a verified carrier picks the car up from your door. The driver walks around it with you and notes any existing marks on a condition report, the car then travels the Madrid to Badajoz to Lisbon corridor on the transporter, and you check it over together again at delivery before signing off. Nothing to pay before pickup.

Do I need to re-register the car in Portugal?

Because both countries are in the EU, there are no customs duties or import taxes when you simply move a car between them. If the car is staying in Portugal for good, you will need to register it locally and settle the applicable vehicle taxes within the legal window, but that is handled by the Portuguese authorities and is separate from the transport itself. Transporting the car and registering it are two different jobs, and we only handle the first.

How should I prepare the car for pickup?
  • Wash it and take dated photos from every side.
  • Leave about a quarter tank of fuel.
  • Remove personal belongings and any toll tag.
  • Switch off the alarm and fold in the mirrors.
  • Tell the driver about leaks, weak batteries or anything unusual.
Can you move a car that does not start?

Yes. Non-runners are welcome as long as they roll and steer, and we send a transporter fitted with a winch to load them safely. The same goes for bigger vehicles: for panel vans and campers, see our van transport service. Just tell us the situation when you book so the right truck is sent to your door.

Is my car insured during the transport?

Yes. Every car travels covered by the carrier's cargo insurance, and the condition report signed at both pickup and delivery protects you if anything is ever disputed. You can read more about how we vet our carriers on the why choose Send Your Auto page.
