Austria to Italy is one of the busiest car transport corridors in the Alps, because so many vehicles move south for sale, relocation or a new life closer to the Mediterranean. A typical booking from our price table: a Volkswagen Tiguan collected in Vienna and delivered to Milan, 860 km and about 8h 30m behind the wheel if you drove it yourself. Book a spot on a multi-car transporter instead, hand over the keys, and meet the car at the other end.

This route is booked by online buyers bringing home an Austrian find, expats and families relocating to northern Italy, dealers moving stock across the border, and classic owners who would rather not add winter miles to the clock. Vienna, Salzburg and Innsbruck are our busiest Austrian collection hubs, feeding Verona, Milan, Bologna and the rest of the north. Our car transport service covers it all door to door, and if you are shipping the other way we also run car transport from Italy to Austria.

How much does car transport from Austria to Italy cost?

A real example from our price table: moving a Volkswagen Tiguan from Vienna to Milan, an 860 km trip, costs 730 to 950 euros without VAT on an open transporter. That is the shared-load rate, with your car riding alongside several others on the same truck.

What moves the price up or down: how easy the pickup and delivery points are to reach, the size and weight of the car, whether it runs (a non-runner needs a winch), and whether you want an enclosed trailer for a classic or high-value car. A flexible collection window almost always brings the price down, since we can slot your car onto a truck already heading south. Austria and Italy are both in the EU, so there are no customs duties and no border paperwork on this route. Request a free quote and you will have your exact price in minutes.

How long does car transport from Austria to Italy take?

The drive itself is around 860 km and roughly 8h 30m, most of it down the A22 over the Brenner Pass, the main gateway from Innsbruck into the Alto Adige and on toward Verona, Milan and Bologna. Trucks coming from Vienna or Salzburg often join near Villach and cross at Tarvisio into Friuli instead. It is an entirely overland route, so there are no ferries or crossings to schedule around. Because a transporter picks up and drops off several cars along the way, plan on 3 to 6 days door to door depending on your collection window and how quickly the truck fills. If your car starts further north, our car transport from Germany to Italy route often shares the same Brenner corridor.

Why book a transporter instead of driving?

✓ No Brenner tolls or Alpine passes to tackle yourself✓ No winter tyres or snow chains needed✓ No extra kilometres on a car you just bought✓ Door to door pickup and delivery✓ Verified, insured carriers✓ Non-runners welcome

Tip: between November and March the Brenner can see snow and traffic checks, so give us a slightly wider collection window in winter and we will match you to the first suitable truck.

Good to know

How does car transport from Austria to Italy work?

Tell us the two postcodes and the car, we confirm a fixed price and a collection window, and a vetted carrier picks the car up from your door or the seller. It travels the Brenner or Tarvisio corridor and is inspected at both pickup and delivery, with photos signed off each time. Nothing to pay before pickup.

Do I need to re-register the car once it is in Italy?

If the car is staying in Italy you will need to re-register it with the Motorizzazione and get Italian plates, usually within a few weeks of import. Because both countries are in the EU there are no customs duties to pay, it is purely a registration and road-tax matter.

How should I prepare the car for pickup?
  • Wash it and take dated photos from every side.
  • Leave about a quarter tank of fuel.
  • Remove personal belongings and any toll tag.
  • Switch off the alarm and fold in the mirrors.
  • Tell the driver about leaks, weak batteries or anything unusual.
Can you move a car that does not start?

Yes. Non-runners are welcome as long as you tell us in advance whether the car rolls, steers and brakes, so the driver brings a winch. If you are actually moving a van rather than a car, see our van transport service.

Is my car insured during the transport?

Yes, every carrier carries cargo insurance that covers your vehicle during loading, transit and unloading. Personal items left inside are not covered, so take them out. More on how we vet carriers is on our why choose Send Your Auto page.
